The hottest tile trends for 2016’s interior designs

In 2016, tiles will play a prolific role in interior design considerations. From the bathroom floor to the kitchen wall, we’ll see exciting designs, colours and finishes working alongside tried-and-tested favourites.

The perfect way to inject personality into any room in the home, tiles will continue to emerge as a key approach to creating a feature wall, floor or point of interest. Statement-making porcelain and ceramic tiles will be prominent – anything from high-gloss mirror effects to boldly coloured or highly patterned designs.

Combinations of colour

While last year’s greys will remain consistent throughout 2016, we’ll see a move towards darker shades, particularly in the bathroom. Grey porcelain tiles will continue to be extremely popular, as an elegant accompaniment to a dazzling white bathroom suite. Richer colours will also be on the rise – with dark purple, indigo, midnight blue and rouge being on-trend, as well as matte greens. Dramatic colour and pigment combinations will also be a big emerging style.

The popularity of metallics will continue through this year, with rose gold, brass and copper adorning the most stylish kitchens and bathrooms. Gold is tipped to be the absolute must-have colour in the home in 2016.

The natural touch

From colours and materials to finishes and furniture, nature is by far the biggest interior design inspiration this year. The theme of ‘bringing the outside in’ will be evident in all rooms of the home.

We’ll see wood effect and natural stone tiles being a widespread choice for both floors and walls, and the rise in demand for wood and stone-effect porcelain tiles is set to increase dramatically, thanks to advances in technology making them a stunningly realistic and highly practical alternative.

For the ultimate ‘outside in’ experience, we’ll see floor tiles running seamlessly from inside the house to an outdoor living area.

Making a statement

Last year we saw experimentation with shapes, patterns and texture and in 2016 this trend will grow ever stronger, with collaborations of all three being used for an uber contemporary look.

In the kitchen, we’ll see tiles being used to create dramatic features – from a statement floor to an eye-catching splash back – working with both modern and traditional themes.

For freshness, we’ll see white tiles being a highly prevalent choice, with split-face, beveled and hexagonal mosaics also being big trends, adding depth and interest to a plan or neutral space.

Extra-large format porcelain tiles will feature heavily in bathroom designs, stunningly complementing indulgent freestanding baths and supersized walk-in showers, in ways a smaller, regular tile is unable to. A bold and fitting tile choice will be prominent in the bathroom, to deliver the maximum impact.

In 2016 tiles will be seen as the ideal way to bring some character into the home. As consumers increasingly look for personalised touches, bespoke wall and floor tiles will become must-have features – whether a print, pattern or customised format.

A mix of materials

This year we’ll see confidence increasing when it comes to experimenting with a mix of materials in the home. Moving away from the traditional notion of ‘matching’ items, different finishes and contrast will be a significant design theme. From wood and slate to brick and even concrete, this more eclectic look will see a combination of textured surfaces working beautifully together.

Marble and marble-effect tiles will be hugely popular, not only for a touch of glamour, but to add something new to the omnipresent outdoors/indoor trend. We’ll also see slate breaking through as a highly sought-after tile choice.
